Welcome to the Statement of Cash Flows
Learn how to assess cash flow through a credit analyst lens.
In this module, you will explore the role of the Statement of Cash Flows in commercial credit assessment and why cash generation is critical to understanding repayment capacity.
The phrase “cash is king” reflects a fundamental principle in credit analysis. A business may report a profit, but that does not necessarily mean it is generating enough cash to meet its obligations. For a credit analyst, the key question is whether the borrower is producing sufficient cash to fund operations, meet working capital requirements and service interest and debt repayments.
You will learn how to interpret cash flows from operating, investing and financing activities, assess the quality and sustainability of cash generation, and identify factors that may place pressure on liquidity and repayment capacity.
You will also consider how cash flow information connects with the Profit & Loss Statement and Balance Sheet to provide a more complete view of the borrower’s financial position and performance.
By the end of this module, you will be able to use cash flow analysis to assess repayment capacity, identify key credit risks and support well-reasoned credit recommendations.
